It doesn’t matter if you are a famous celebrity or not, hackers are targeting not only poplar celebrities’ account, but also millions of other users. Recently a such incident has been witnesses where the Instagram account of not only famous celebrities are hacked, but also the account of other users also compromised and were at the risk of data compromise and identity theft. The issue came in the light when a famous international signer’s account was compromised and the hackers trade on the bug in application programming interface (API) for accessing the email addresses and phone numbers. There was nothing like that hackers were just focusing and targeting A-lister accounts. They stole the private information of millions of accounts.

The social media giant release news that it was the celebrities accounts that were targeted not the ‘regular’ accounts. Hackers who used to call themselves Doxagram created an online database on the dark web which is accessible for cybercriminals. This data includes the contact info of the celebrities at the cost of only $10 (price of two cups of coffee)”. When the news was viral, the CTO of Instagram has to release a statement confirming the scale of the breach. The CTO said that “We care deeply about the safety and security of the Instagram community, so we want to let you know that recently we discovered a bug on Instagram that could be used for accessing some people’s email address and phone number even if they were not public”.

However, along with the statement of Instagram CTO, Mike Krieger, Instagram claimed that only a “low percentage” of accounts were affected. As soon as this news was prompted by Instagram, hackers quickly disapprove the claim and this forced the company to advise its users how they can protect themselves from such an attack. “Additionally, Instagram said that we’re encouraging our users to report us about any unusual activity through our reporting tools”. If the reports are believed, it was also heard that an official account of the president of the United States of America taken care by the social media team of the White House, was one among the affected by the hack six million Instagram accounts. This was not the first time when such news was in buzz because of the security issues, a few months back, Yahoo users also faced the same issue.
