Review of Xiaomi Mi Note 2
« on: December 10, 2016, 11:48:48 AM »
A lot has changed since the release of Xiaomi’s Mi Note and Mi Note Pro. The Mi Note 2 is very  much similar to the recent Xiaomi Mi5s Plus and overall it is a fantastic Android Phone, but somewhat overshadowed at its launch because of awe-inspiring bezel-less Mi Mix. In terms of its design, it has much common with Galaxy Note 7. It is unfortunate that technology media din’t pay attention to it because of the bezel-less Mi Mix, but if you leave aside its ‘only’ full-HD but still acuminous flexible OLED panel, it is a really nice phone and a true competitor to better known flagships.

For those who are looking for a big-screen phone with a nice design and lots of power features with powerful design,  the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 may prove a good buy. This phone comes with global LTE connectivity, but not as standard. The Global Mi Note 2 supports 37 bands and has full UK 4G LTE connectivity for three bands 3, 7 and 20.

Design and Build

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is a stunning device and its gorgeous curved edges at the front and back  add excellence in its design. At the front it has got rich OLED display and the entire device has high-gloss black finish. It features a metal unibody and retains its glass front and rear. The Xiaomi has a 5.7in panel and has a lower screen resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, but you’ll not be disappointed with this screen. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is gorgeous nonetheless. It is a big-screen phone, but easily usable - especially when you invoke its One Handed mode.

In order to achieve this curved screen, it has used flexible OLED panel and you will love the vibrant colours and deep contrast of OLED tech as you can fine-tune the screen appearance according to your taste. Xiaomi lists 100 percent NTSC colour gamut, a screen-to-body ratio of 77.2 percent and 100,000:1 contrast ratio. It has a lightning-fast fingerprint scanner built into the home button. This new build has USB type C and only one speaker grilles sit either side.  It has some decent audio credentials with 192 kHz/24-bit audio and if you keep its bottom-facing speaker clear, it is pretty loud.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 battery capacity has increased by more than 25 percent (4,070mAh) still just adds 7g and less than a millimetre to its belly. Its battery is not removable and doesn’t support wireless charging. This battery supports Quick Charge 3.0 and you charge the phone to 83 percent in half an hour. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is remarkably thin at 7.8mm and available in Glacier Silver and Piano Black. Both colors are with a glass front and rear and 7-series aluminum frame.

Hardware and Performance

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is available in two configurations: 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Its top-end model is also available with Global LTE support. All three configurations run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor at 2.35GHz with Adreno 530 GPU. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is an incredibly fast smartphone, and no matter what you do on it, it doesn’t hang around. Storage is incredibly generous at 64GB as standard, but there’s no microSD card slot for external storage in case you need more space. Its high capacity battery may last more than a day and a half.

Connectivity

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is a dual-SIM dual-standby phone and at a time, you can use either of the two Nano-SIM slots to connect to a 4G network, but other one will then max out at 3G. International buyers need to check out its Global version that supports GSM 2/3/5/8, CDMA 1X/EVDO 0/1/10/15, WCDMA 1/2/4/5/8, TD-SCDMA 34/39, LTE-TDD 38/39/40/41, and LTE-FDD 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/18/19/20/25/26/28/29/30.

The fingerprint scanner of Mi Note 2 is incredibly fast and built into the Home button at the front.
This ties in with the full NFC support, which is necessary for making mobile payments. Xiaomi made a big deal out of Mi Pay at the Mi Note 2 launch, though in the UK you’ll be more interested in Android Pay. The Mi Note 2’s has a high-accuracy GPS module supports GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS and Beidou. It also caters for Bluetooth 4.2, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and USB-C, and it has even an IR blaster.

Cameras

At the rear, the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has a 23Mp (actually 22.56Mp), f/2.0 Sony IMX318 camera with a dual-tone flash and support for 4K video with EIS. It is amazing to find that even though having the thin chassis, this huge sensor sits flush to the phone. With the incredibly high megapixel, you can capture immense amount of detail. Provided lighting colors are very realistic. At the front, it has 8MP camera that supports autofocus. The selfie also integrates Beautify 3.0 that will help you in creating more attractive self-portraits.

Software

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 runs MIUI 8.0 that is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Mi Note 2 for UK use does not come preinstalled with Google apps. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has lots to offer and small hands can use this big phone by enabling the settings to shrink down the screen size to 4.5-, 4.0- or 3.5in for convenient operation. Other features that aid usability include back a step, take a screenshot, the Quick ball that allow you place anywhere a button onscreen to quickly return to the home screen, and more. Its ability to reverse the order of the back and multitasking buttons is also appreciable.

In comparison to its predecessors, there are a number of changes in MIUI 8. The drop-down notification bar is now with new quick access icons running along its top. Xiaomi has introduced some new features like double-tap to wake, Second Space, individual App Lock Dual Apps (allowing you to run a second version of an app on the phone), and support for Mi Wallet as well as moved around a few items in the Settings menu.

Other new features include an enhanced video-editing tools plus some photo features to add doodles, stickers and quickly share your snaps, energy saving mode, the new easier-on-the-eyes Mi Lanting font, calculator apps and updated QR scanner, brighter colors, an enhanced multi-tasking menu,  and new lock screen wallpapers.
